Tres Leches Cake Recipe / Three-Milk Cake

Crystal Marie

Every year someone in my family wants a Tres Leches cake, my sister is typically in charge of making it. She does a great job, and we don’t have to worry about driving a long distance to get a tres leches cake. Instead we bake it at home.

Tres Leches Cake / Tree-Milk Cake

Ingredients
Vanilla cake mix (preferred brand) (you can also use a chocolate cake mix)
1 can of Sweetened condensed milk
1 can of evaporated milk
1 quart of heavy whipped cream (this will be divided)
Your preferred fruit (picture used kiwi and strawberries)
1-2 tsp of vanilla extract

Follow directions to bake cake on back of cake box. Once cake has been taken out of the oven allow time for cake to be cooled before adding other ingredients. While cake is cooling this is where you’ll use the cans of evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. You’ll mix 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, 1 can of evaporated milk, and 14 ounces of heavy whipped cream. You’ll put in all three milks in mixing bowl and whisk until all three milks have been combined. You’ll want to ensure the mixture is well blended, to the point you cannot tell the difference between milks.

Place cooled cake onto a deep container, and poke holes throughout cake using a fork. You’ll need to do this to ensure that the milk mixture spreads throughout the cake evenly. You’ll slowly pour milk mixture on top of cake. Again, make sure it is evenly distributed as it will affect the taste of the cake. Typically, you’ll allow it to sit for 4-5 hours, ensuring cake absorbs milk mixture. (If you are in a pinch and need it done faster you can repeatedly scoop up the milk mixture and pour back on top of cake, making sure to fill all the holes). While the cake is absorbing the milk mixture, you’ll want to slice the necessary fruit. For example, kiwi, oranges, strawberries, peaches, mango’s, bananas, etc. If adding blueberries, grapes, raspberries, blackberries, you’ll typically want to add them whole (your choice).

Once you have sliced your fruit, place it into a separate container, you’ll come back to it later. Place fruit in fridge until cake is frosted.

To create the frosting, use remaining heavy whipped cream, 1-2 tsp of vanilla extract, and add four to seven tablespoons of sugar according to taste in mixing bowl. You’ll use a hand mixer to blend ingredients until you have a stiff whipped cream.

Once whipped cream is ready, bring out cake, and apply whipped cream generously, once cake has been covered by whipped cream, you can place your fruit throughout the cake. Serve cake chilled. Make sure to keep cake refrigerated. Enjoy.
